Health Select Committee to ask hard questions of health bosses

When the Health and Adult Social Care select committee meets on Wednesday 8 January, three major local areas of the health service will come in for hard questioning.

The Health and Social Care meeting will cover:

1. Community Health Services.

We will look at the provision of Community health services. The focus will be on mental health and we will hear from service users of the Campbell centre. The centre had a very poor inspection report on the 24 April (failing all 8 standards) and it is currently subject to a further inspection. Cllr Nigel Long. Chair of the Health and Adult Social care select committee said, "I am concerned that mental health services are a Cinderella service in our city. We need to explore the services provided including at the Campbell centre."

2. Update on MK Hospital

Cllr Long then added, "We will take evidence from the CEO of the Hospital. We will want to ask about A&E over the Christmas period and explore staff shortages and service pressures."

3. Health Care Forward Planning

The third area the committee will explore is how health care services are planned in Milton Keynes. This will look at how future provision of GP practices is decided. There have been recent major problems over the closure of a Willen practice and different problems over the opening of a new GP practice in Wolverton.

Cllr Long added, "We want to ensure that recent problems like the closure of the Willen GP practice and the disputed opening of the Wolverton practice do not occur again and that enough new GP practises are planned for in the areas of city growth."

The meeting, starting at 7.00 is open to members of the public and looks like being an important evening scrutinising key health services and future services.

Cllr Long concluded, "We welcome members of the public joining us to consider these crucial matters for our growing city."
