Last Friday (02.06.17) there were 795 homeless families in temporary accommodation including 1298 children.

No wonder Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Milton Keynes South Cllr Hannah O’Neill is pleased with Labour’s commitment to tackle the housing crisis facing Milton Keynes. Labour, nationally, is committed to:

  • A New Deal for first-time buyers on ordinary incomes, including 100,000 new discounted FirstBuy Homes, a two year stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers, and an extension and re-focusing of Help to Buy so that it is only for first-time buyers;
  • A New Deal for those 1.2 million on council waiting lists with a huge increase in affordable house building to be building 100,000 genuinely affordable homes a year by 2022, including the biggest council housing programme in over 30 years;

Cllr O’Neill said, “Thousands of Milton Keynes residents live in expensive poor quality housing, hundreds are in temporary accommodation. I am committed to tackling the broken housing market. I am committed to building new council homes for rent and for low cost sale.

Cllr Hannah O’Neill should know. She started the building of 200 new Council houses in Milton Keynes when Labour took over the leadership of Milton Keynes Council.

Cllr O’Neill said, “I am proud that I started a new Council housing programme in Milton Keynes after years of inactivity by Conservative councillors. I am delighted that the Labour party is making tackling the housing crisis a priority. I will make sure the needs of Milton Keynes families are met. Just think what a Labour Government could do to make life better for the many people in poor quality, high rent housing. I aim to deliver good housing for all. But we need to be free of the Tory restrictions (the cap) on housing investment.

She concluded, “It is worth reminding ourselves that the Tory MP for Milton Keynes South consistently refused to back the campaign to remove the cap. He, of course, has a nice house. I want good affordable, secure housing for everyone.
