10,000 carers in Milton Keynes may not be in receipt of the fill financial support they are entitled too according to a new report.

Applying the national percentage of 42% it would mean 10,080 MK carers are not in receipt of financial support. Yet carers in Milton Keynes play a critical role in helping vulnerable people lead independent and fulfilling lives. Labour is calling for the Council to ensure that all MK carers receive the carer’s allowance and are properly supported to avoid debt and big bills! 

Cllr Nigel Long, Labour lead on health and adult social care, who is also director of a disability charity, said, “Carers are central to the delivery of good care and support for many vulnerable people. Yet many carers are struggling in this difficult climate. I want to see all carers receiving the carer’s allowance.”

Labour recognises that without the valuable role of carers many vulnerable people would not have a good quality of life. Many more would end up dependent on the Council and end up in high cost residential and nursing home care.

Cllr Long added, “I am calling upon MK Council to talk to all the cities 24,000 carers to ensure they are all in receipt of the Carers Allowance and getting appropriate financial support. They play a vital role and should not be forced into debt or forced into relying on high cost borrowing.”
