Labour led Milton Keynes has responded to the end of the cap controlling  borrowing on new Council Housing with 4 immediate actions: 

• ACTION 1: To start  the process to build nearly 600 new Council houses on Council owned land. 
• ACTION 2: To establish a cross part Advisory group involving tenant representatives to advise on building thousands  of  new Council houses over the next 5 years.
• ACTION 3: To review how the borrowing provision can fund regeneration.
• ACTION 4: To consider how Council housing can be included in all new housing development across the new city as part of the local planning application discussions.

The cap was lifted on the 29^th October and Labour will lose no time in starting to build again.

Cabinet member for Housing and regeneration Cllr Nigel Long said,  “The removal of the cap is long overdue, but is welcome. Now we aim to tackle the cities homelessness and housing crisis by building new Council housing that is genuinely affordable and of a high standard.”

Council Leader Pete Marland added, “This is potentially good news, though we need to see the details. It may allow us to address the fact that there were 600 families in temporary accommodation last weekend. We will start work immediately to implement the building of new Council houses on council owned land.”       

Labour have announced 4 actions to start the ball rolling to tackle the homelessness and housing crisis.

Cllr Long concluded, “I am meeting Officers this week to start the new homes building process. I will then establish a cross party Advisory group with a third of the members being tenants drawn from existing resident Associations. We can then look at the longer term and at how to fund regeneration.”
