A neglected playground in Shenley Church End desperately needed a ‘makeover’, according to local resident and community campaigner Ben Nolan.

Ben Nolan said: “This is a really nice playground but it needs work and some refurbishment to bring it up to scratch. There is moss growing over the gravel and the bushes need trimming back. The hopscotch bricks need to be cleaned. Some of the equipment needs to be repainted. A number of local parents and grandparents have raised it with me.”

Following lobbying by Ben Nolan and local councillor Zoe Nolan the makeover has been agreed. It will include:    

• Removing the moss from the area around the swings and the see-saw
• Refurbishing both benches
• Trimming back hedge near the slide, see saw and ball- hoop
• Painting the see-saw and slide
• Clearing off the brickwork where the hopscotch is located

A delighted Ben Nolan continued: “I’m really pleased that Milton Keynes Council have agreed to do this work immediately. Parks are a great facility for local people. As a new father I know I will be spending a bit of time in our playparks! This is a beautiful part of Milton Keynes but I’ve seen the impact government cuts are having everywhere and they are evident here in this playpark. It’s great that the Council have stepped up here.”

The ‘makeover’ was funded through some MKC money and Cllr Zoe Nolan’s ward budget.

Zoe Nolan, Local Labour Councillor for Loughton and Shenley ward, added:“Local residents wanted to see this park improved. They have been picking up litter in the area and cutting back the long grass themselves but they told us more needs to be done. I was happy to contribute a small part of my Councillor’s ward grant to the refurbishment and to advocate to have the necessary work completed.”

Keeping local play areas is an important priority for local councillors and community campaigners like Ben Nolan.

Ben concluded:“Living locally, it is important to listen to residents and take up issues that matter to the community. A well maintained play area is important. This ‘makeover’ is great news for everyone.”
