Cllr Shammi Akter, a Milton Keynes Councillor for Woughton and Fishermead ward and a Woughton Community Councillor for Netherfield, has welcomed the latest community fridge initiative to be set up on Netherfield, which will launch on the 29th January.

Hot on the heels of a similar initiative by the Community Council on Coffee Hall, this initiative will be located at the Netherfield Chapel on Broadlands. Surplus food will be provided by local businesses or members of the public and local people will be able to pick it up completely free of charge. As well as being an invaluable initiative to help families struggling with high food costs, the community fridges also aim to tackle rising levels of food waste across the country.  1.9 million tonnes of food is wasted by the food industry every year in the UK which includes everyone from farmers and growers to manufacturers and processors to wholesalers, retailers and food service companies.

The Community Fridge initiative will commence on the 29th January. Initial opening times are:

  • Tuesdays 5:30pm to 6:30pm
  • Thursdays 10:00am to 11:00am

Cllr Shammi Akter applauds local activists for launching MK's third community fridge in Netherfield.

Cllr Shammi Akter said: “This is a superb initiative that the residents of Netherfield will find really useful. I am sure it will be well used. I would like to pay tribute to Mike Baldwin and others for bringing this idea to fruition.”

Mike Baldwin said: “I am a local resident of MK south and I always wanted to start a community fridge in MK south after seeing the success of the Wolverton community fridge. I believe it will help and support the local residents and I would like to thank Netherfield Vineyard Church who also has a strong ethos to be community focused and an integral part of the community it serves.”
