Milton Keynes Labour Party has called the decision of the Prime Minister to suspend Parliament a dangerous threat to democracy in our country.

Today it emerged that Boris Johnson has asked to suspend Parliament in early September and it will not sit again until the middle of October, only 15 days before the U.K. is due to leave the European Union.

It is widely regarded as an act to try and stop Members of Parliament from preventing a no-deal Brexit after Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn yesterday agreed to work with other opposition leaders to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

Cllr Peter Marland, Labour Leader of MK Council, said: “Suspending Parliament for the longest ever period in the middle of a crisis such as Brexit is a very dangerous act. Make no mistake that trying to bypass Parliament is a fundamental challenge to our democratic system and the first act in a real threat to our democratic principles.”

He continued: “Whether you want Brexit or you don’t, threatening our democracy and dividing people even more is not the way forward. It is shameful. Boris Johnson is clearly taking his lead from President Trump in ignoring basic core democratic values. Placing the Queen in the middle of a political row shows how low he will sink after it became clear he could not bully the EU or Parliament with his lies any longer.”

He concluded: “A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster for Milton Keynes, however this is about more than that. It is about our democratic system and democratic values. Members of Parliament have every right, and it is in fact their duty, to hold the Prime Minister to account. We do not live in an authoritarian totalitarian state. We have two Conservative MPs willing to serve a Prime Minister leading us towards that, they are complicit in a rich-list coup. These actions are a threat to democracy that we need to stand against.”

Charlynne Pullen, Parliamentary Candidate for Milton Keynes North, said: “Boris Johnson’s plans to suspend Parliament to push through no deal are anti-democratic and clearly motivated by a desire to ensure the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal. With this news, there is less time to stop no deal. That means we may need a general election to avert the economic catastrophe of leaving the EU without any arrangements for getting food, medicines and goods into our country.”

She continued: “In the coming general election, people in Milton Keynes North can make a difference. Only a vote for Labour can guarantee a Labour Government and not letting Boris Johnson back into Downing Street.”

Hannah O’Neill, Parliamentary Candidate for Milton Keynes South, said: “I’ve made clear my opposition to a no deal Brexit – one that could leave people in Milton Keynes, and particularly the most vulnerable, without food and medical supplies. The Prime Minister’s attempt to force this position through, sidelining our democratic elected representatives, is a disgrace and puts people’s lives at genuine risk. I will continue to fight for our city and ask Iain Stewart to do the same and challenge his Party Leader.”
