Zoe Nolan: Loughton and Shenley

Zoe Nolan: Loughton and Shenley

Your concerns are my concerns

I’m your Labour councillor for Loughton and Shenley ward, which includes the areas of Great Holm, Loughton, Shenley Church End, Oakhill, Medbourne, Shenley Wood and Grange Farm. The very best thing about being a councillor is being able to meet you, hear about your concerns and work with you, the council officers and our partners to resolve issues in our area. One of the greatest joys and privileges of being a councillor is to be able to knock on your door and speak to you about the issues that you feel passionate about.

I’ve lived in this area, with my family, for 24 years. My children have attended local schools and playgroups, and my husband is a business man in Milton Keynes and a school governor. My background is in psychology and management, and I’m currently employed as a Consultant Psychologist with the NHS.

It was never my intention to enter politics. When my sons left home, I gradually became more drawn into local community issues. I wanted to engage others whose views were not being represented, or who were disillusioned with politics. I wanted to ensure their voices would be heard.

I’m a keen advocator for this area, and am currently the Deputy Chair of the parish council for Loughton and Great Holm. I’m also Vice Chair of the Children and Young People’s Select Committee, and sit on the Corporate Parenting Panel. In the past, I have been a member of the Economy, Growth and Regeneration Select Committee, the Housing and Communities Committee, and the Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee.

As a councillor, I have achieved a number of successes. I led the campaign against the closure of the Great Holm Fire Station, and kept the campaign in the public eye. We now have a written agreement from the Fire Authority to keep the station open until the new station, at West Ashlands, is built and fully operational. I will continue to ensure that this agreement is honoured.

The expansion in housing on the West Flank of Stony Stratford will impact on already strained Hilltops and Watling Vale medical centres. I fought for years to secure funding for a new medical centre at Whitehouse, in the Western Expansion Area of Milton Keynes. As a result, Milton Keynes Council has recently announced a £!3m investment to make this happen.

I also care deeply about the issues that affect our everyday lives, which is why I have been campaigning for much needed improvements to the Loughton Path and Kensington Drive Sports Field. Funding has now been secured, along with commitments from Milton Keynes Council to make the necessary repairs this year.

I’ve consistently lobbied MK Council officers to find the budgets and get the work done. I’m hard-working and committed. I don’t give up, and I will always be available to talk to you about the issues that are important to you.
