Since 2010, Conservative-led governments have allowed train companies to hit passengers across Milton Keynes with massive fares rises of over 30%.

In 2010, an annual Milton Keynes to London season ticket cost £3,832. Now that same ticket costs £5,028, a rise of 31% or £1,196 under Conservative-led governments. It is a similar story for Wolverton residents.

The next Labour Government will put rail passengers first by putting the brakes on rapidly increasing rail fares and saving commuters £1,014 over the course of a parliament, around £200 a year, on their season tickets.

A Labour government would restrict the amount train operators could raise ticket prices by linking any change in fares to a lower measure of inflation than the one currently used.

The Conservative manifesto from the 2015 election promised that regulated fares could rise by no more than the retail price index (RPI). Instead, Labour will cap them at the consumer price index (CPI), a measure of inflation which tends to be lower.

Charlynne Pullen said: “The Conservatives are presiding over a rip-off railway in Britain. Season tickets for passengers travelling from Milton Keynes into London have now risen by over 31 per cent under two Conservative-led Governments, forcing people to pay thousands of pounds more to commute to work on increasingly overcrowded trains.“

She added “Labour will take Britain’s railways back into public control and put more money into people’s pockets by capping fares. This will save commuters on average £1,014 on their rail season tickets over the next Parliament, as part of our plan to promote services for the many, not the few.“
