Just weeks ahead of the Autumn Statement, new analysis from MK Labour reveals the devastating cut in government funding to Milton Keynes under the Conservatives.

In 2010, under a Labour Government, Milton Keynes City Council received £98m in Government funding for local services – the equivalent of £143m in today’s prices.

This funding has drastically reduced throughout a decade of cuts, meaning that the City Council received just £55m in 2023 – a cut of 62% and a real terms reduction of £88m.

Under the Conservatives, the City Council’s budget has been reduced by 21% but demand for services has massively increased.

Councillor Pete Marland, Labour Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, has written to the Chancellor ahead of the Autumn Statement to demand a fair deal for Milton Keynes. The text of the letter is repeated below.

Dear Jeremy,

Under the Conservatives Milton Keynes has taken a battering. Low growth, stagnant wages, high prices and failing public services have been the story of the last 13 years. Over the last 12 months, the inflation your party unleashed with the reckless mini-budget has deepened the cost of living crisis, pushing many Milton Keynes families beyond breaking point.

Yet still, the Conservative Party refuses to give Milton Keynes a fair deal. New analysis reveals the staggering cuts successive Tory chancellors have inflicted in our area.

In 2010, under Labour, Milton Keynes received £98m a year – the equivalent of £143m today. Today we receive just £55m, a cut of 62%.

Milton Keynes is a proud area, and we have no problem standing on our own two feet – but you are cutting us off at the knees.

In the light of these figures, you must now offer a fair deal for Milton Keynes. Our area must not be hit harder than other parts of the country.

I look forward to your reply – and a fair deal for Milton Keynes.

Kind regards,

Councillor Pete Marland

Leader of Milton Keynes City Council
