MPs encourage eligible households to apply for Warm Homes Discount

This week is the last that eligible households can apply for the Warm Homes Discount, and the city’s Labour MPs are encouraging Milton Keynes residents to make sure they are accessing support with the cost of living.

Over 6 million homes across the country are entitled to benefit from the discount this year, which provides £150 to help qualifying households with the cost of heating their homes, giving vital support with the cost of living.

The scheme has been extended by the Labour Government, meaning even more people will benefit this year. An additional 2.7 million households, including 900,000 more families with children and a total of 1.8 million households in fuel poverty, can benefit from the discount. Every billpayer on means-tested benefits will now qualify, removing restrictions that previously excluded many who needed help and providing peace of mind to millions more families.

96% of Warm Home Discount recipients in England and Wales will receive the rebate automatically this winter (2025/2026). However, a small number will need to phone the helpline number by 27 February.

Those who have not received a letter or the discount but think they are eligible should call 0800 030 9322 by Friday.

Callum Anderson, MP for Buckingham and Bletchley, said, “This Labour Government is increasing support available to households to help with the cost of living, and making help easier to access. As the deadline to apply approaches, we want to ensure that every family who is eligible for this support knows about it and that nobody gets left behind.”

Emily Darlington, MP for Milton Keynes Central, added, “Nobody in our city should be worrying about how they are heating their home. While the majority of people eligible for this funding will receive it automatically, making the process easier for all, we’re encouraging families who think they might have been missed out to ring the helpline to make sure they receive support they are entitled to.”

Chris Curtis, MP for Milton Keynes North, concluded, “We know the cost of living is still having a significant impact on people in Milton Keynes, including the most vulnerable. There is help available, and every billpayer on means-tested benefits now qualifies for the Warm Homes discount. Please check and make sure you are getting this vital help if that describes your household.”
